Lake Altus – Lugert has had fish kills kills this winter,
as a result of a golden algae bloom
(Prymnesium parvum)

Golden algae is a naturally occurring type of algae.
It has the potential to produce blooms that are toxic
to gill-breathing organisms such as fish and mussels.
There is no evidence blooms are harmful to humans, pets,
other wildlife, or livestock.
However, people should not pick up dead or dying fish for consumption.

Golden alga blooms are not a public health threat.
Healthy fish caught here are safe to eat.

What you can do to reduce the spread of golden algae to other Lakes

•Drain all lake water from watercraft, live wells and equipment before leaving the lake.
•Rinse out watercraft, live wells and fishing equipment at home
and allow it to dry before using it at another lake or river.
•Do not move water, aquatic plants or wildlife offsite.
•If you see MANY dead or dying fish or large numbers of fish behaving strangely, report your observations as soon as possible to the local game warden.
