March 25th: What’s making all the pollen that has my eyes itching?

Blackjack Oak, Post Oak, and Cottonwoods are all in bloom.


March 23rd: What is the first wildflower to bloom at Quartz Mountain and when does it bloom?

Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica) is one of the first noticeable wildflowers and can bloom as early as February.


March 17th: Can we have a campfire this weekend?

If you're camping on the north shore (Lakeview Campground), no.
That side of the park is in Kiowa County and they have a total Fire Ban.
If you're camping in the Main Park (Greer County) you may have a small campfire for cooking.
Bon Fires are banned in both counties


March 17th: Are the Bald Eagles till here?

No they have left for the season. However the Turkey Vultures are back!


March 16th: Are the Crappie biting?

Yes they are...on minnows.

YES

As of Sat. Feb,12-Yes, but they will probably be leaving soon


January 28th: Are there REALLY Ringtail Cats at Quartz Mountain?

Yes, there are! Ringtails are mostly nocturnal, though in the summer of 2009,
Ringtails were seen several times during the day (near the northside of the dam)


January 21st: Where's the best place to see Bald Eagles are at Quartz Mountain?

This year, the Hicks Mountain boat ramp!


January 14th: How many Bald Eagles are at Quartz Mountain?

Just 4 have been spotted regularly. 2 mature and 2 immature

No, not any longer


December 4th: Are the Bald Eagles here yet?

YES! Some have arrived!
Two immature Bald Eagles (no white head or tail feathers) have been seen at the Hicks Mountain boat ramp


November 26th: Are the Bald Eagles here yet?

Not Yet.
They may arrive on the next cold front.


November 17th: What are the large white birds on the lake ?

White Pelicans

November 3rd: Do Whooping Cranes stop at Quartz Mountain?

Whooping Cranes have been seen flying overhead with Sandhill Cranes.
It has bee quite a while since they have been seen on the gound at Quartz mountain.

The first stocking date is October 28 – Thursday
After that it is about every 2 weeks-

October 17th: Why does the Eagle's Roost ATV Area Close for the winter?

That area of the park is a favorite roost area of the Bald Eagles.
The Bald Eagle is still protrected under Federal law
D isturbing roosting eagles is a violation under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.


October 12: Why are some trails closed during deer season?

Hunting on PARK property is prohibited.
Hunting does occur on nearby PRIVATE property. Trails that are very close to private property close during hunting season, to keep park visitors safe.


October 3: What are those large, bumpy, greenish-yellow fruits?

Those are the fruits of the Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera) tree.
Other common names for this tree are: Horse-apple, Hedge-apple, Bois D'Arc, or Bodark.

Squirrels tear the fruit apart to get to the seeds.
Common folk-lore states Osage Oranges repel spiders, cockroaches and other insects.

The wood is very strong and flexible.
It was used by Native Americans to make bows.
